Want to get the best from your interns?
Working with millennials might not come easy to everyone, so we’ll let you in on our inside secrets…
Follow our 3 tips and you’ll be on your way to becoming a superhero manager!
I’m Mindy and I’m a Millennial. I’m Mindy the Millennial. Millennial Mindy. You get the idea…
Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is that after a few years of work experience, I know what fellow Millennials like me need from their managers so they can become super interns!
1. let us know where we stand
Interns may never have been in a professional environment before – it’s like getting used to a new culture. Even if an intern has worked before, your firm and way of doing things could be completely different to previous experiences.
As a millennial, trust me when I say we like structure and knowing what the rules are.
This doesn’t mean micromanaging us.
It just means giving us the boundaries and pointing us in the right direction. So, do us a favour and give us the best chance of success by setting expectations.
2. check in with us
We’re used to getting a lot of attention from our parents and teachers. We’re not asking for gold star stickers and smiley faces on report cards but we do like to know when we’re doing a good job. It makes us feel valued and appreciated which boosts our motivation and loyalty.
It also lets us know that we’re doing things the way you want. Without the occasional check in, we start to worry and get insecure because we don’t know if we’re on the right track.
3. give us training
The point of being an intern and not a ‘regular’ employee is that we are meant to learn on the job.
If you don’t teach us how to do something, how can we do a good job and make your life easier?
Sure, we expect to do coffee runs but we also need to feel like we’re progressing and building our skills set so we can stay motivated.
If you train us, we can take on more difficult tasks and contribute more to the team saving you time and stress.
Save time and minimize stress by training your interns to become superhero apprentices.
